Production of Rokan Block Balanced 23 Percent of National Oil Production

LAMANRIAU.COM, JAKARTA – Blok Rokan oil field in Riau which was previously managed by PT Chevron Pacific Indonesia (CPI) will move to Pertamina on August 9, 2021. At present, the Rokan Block still produces 207,000 barrels per day, equivalent to 26 percent of national oil production.

Head of the Special Task Force for Upstream Oil and Gas Business Activities (SKK Migas) Dwi Soetjipto said that the Rokan Block reserves are estimated to still have around 1.5 to 2 billion barrels of oil.

Dwi explained, the oil reserves could still be processed for the next 20 years. “We have now made a transition team to handle the transfer of the management of the Rokan Block, a giant oil and gas field in Riau Province,” he said.

“I lead the steering committee, then at the working level they also work on which alternative is the best for Pertamina and of course accommodates Chevron’s needs. So this transition can work,” Dwi said at the Tempo Office, Friday, July 12, 2019.

At the end of July last year, the government established PT Pertamina (Persero) as the largest oil and gas block manager in Indonesia, the Rokan Block in Riau starting August 9, 2021. Blok Rokan was previously operated by a US company, Chevron Pacific Indonesia (CPI).

According to Dwi, the transition team needs to be established so that there is no production decline too far. “Because the (Blok) Mahakam has already taken place yesterday the transition was not so good and the production was so sharp,” he said.

“Not wanting to repeat the Mahakam Block incident, Hopefully SKK can really push Pertamina and Chevron can really sit down and find a meeting point so that it runs as well as possible,” said Dwi.

The Rokan Block is the second largest oil block in Indonesia after Banyu Urip, Cepu Block, Bojonegoro, East Java. The 6,220 kilometer block has 96 fields. Three of them have the potential to produce very good oil, namely Duri, Minas and Bekasap.

Since its operation in 1971 until December 31, 2017, the total production in the Rokan Block has reached 11.5 billion barrels of oil. **
